Are Christians Allowed To Train For Looks?

Something I’ve been thinking about as I’m leading up to my first ever bodybuilding show in 5 weeks…

Am I sinning to be in the gym so that I can look better?

So that I can win a glorified “beauty competition?”

To know our God-commanded boundaries, we must turn to the Bible.

What Christians Definitely Can’t Do…

The Bible specifically lists out these sins: envy and self-boasting (Romans 1:29-31); idolatry and selfish promotion (Galatians 5:19-21); and lovers of self, lovers of pleasure, pride, arrogance, ungratefulness, constantly unsatisfied, and having the appearance of godliness but denying its power (2 Timothy 3:2-5).

The Bible is clear about not acting in a way that causes others to fall into temptation (Romans 14, 1 Corinthians 8).

And we’re taught that a great body with no Godly character is like putting a gold ring in a pig’s snout (Proverbs 11:22).

What Is Allowed…

The Bible never states that good physical appearance is bad. God teaches us that physical training provides value (1 Timothy 4:8), and that our bodies should be a physical representation of the transforming power of the Gospel (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, 9:27).

God is clear on countless occasions that He’s after our hearts, and tying our true love and desires to Him ought to be the primary focus in every single one of life’s endeavors.

🤔 So...Can You Train For Looks?

Yes. It’s not a sin.

BUT…you MUST consider your “Why?”

Good looks are not bad.

But good looks to serve a sinful motive are.

If you’re unsure about your motives, ask yourself…

🔥 How are my looks contributing towards the Great Commission?

Are my good looks helping other people know God better?

Hope this helps you honor God better with your body :)
